One of the most pressing stories here on campus this year has been the events leading up to the 21 Ordinance vote. In March, the city council of Iowa City voted to change the legal age to enter the bars from 19 to 21. This vote passed unanimously and went into effect on June 1st. However, with the strength in numbers of local petitions, this provided a final opportunity to overturn this ruling through the public vote held on November 2nd. Although thousands of voters came out to cast their decision, the 21 Ordinance was upheld, winning by a mere 4%. This decision roused many opinions amongst the students, faculty and local Iowa City residents. It will be interesting to watch this decision unfold and to see the effects on downtown, but with any change, there is always a new opportunity for innovative ideas and improvements to be made.
